KINGSTON — As part of the Advent preparations for the birth of Christ at Christmas, St. Mary’s Church in Kingston was the site of joyful and prayerful efforts by its parishioners, mostly involving local Mexicans and other Hispanics but also involving a number of Anglo parishioners, to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of Mexico and also of the pro-life movement of the United States. Leading up to the traditional early morning serenade of Our Lady at 5 a.m. and later the main Mass at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Kingston, on December 12, a total of about 1,000 persons attended the bilingual Guadalupan Rosary and associated prayers and hymns at St. Mary’s Church, which started on December 1 and concluded on December 11.

Remarked Father Arthur F. Rojas, pastor of St. Mary-St. Peter-Presentation-Sacred Heart Parish, which serves lower Kingston and the town of Esopus, “Efforts were made to broaden the appeal of the devotion of Our Lady of Guadalupe to include English-speakers in part to unite our diverse parish and in part to make others in lower Kingston and Esopus aware of this enduring New World devotion of almost 500 years.” On the feast day itself, a total of about 400 persons attended not only the events at 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. but also the English Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Kingston and the Traditional Latin Mass at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Esopus, which is a mission church of St. Mary’s in Kingston. “Thus, the whole parish in its diversity was involved in the Guadalupan festivities,” noted Father Rojas. A joyful party with Mexican cuisine and dance followed the evening Guadalupan Mass at the Catholic Charities facility on Adams Street in Kingston.

Father Rojas expressed his heartfelt thanks to the mayordomos, the lead organizers Mr. and Mrs. Arturo Aguilar and their associates, as well as the parish’s Guadalupan sodality, Comunidad Guadalupana (Ricardo Rendon, leader) for their cooperation with the successful Guadalupan events of December 1 to 12. St. Mary’s Church in Kingston is the main church of St. Mary-St. Peter-Presentation-Sacred Heart Parish, which is the merger of St. Mary-St. Peter Parish in Kingston and Presentation-Sacred Heart Parish in Port Ewen and Esopus.

Maria-S. Pedro en Kingston con Presentación-Sagrado Corazón de Puerto Ewen y Esopus.
