More than 300 New York City firefighters died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Nearly a quarter of them lived on Staten Island.
Since 2002, on the vigil of September 11, Catholics in Staten Island gather for an Eve of Solemn Remembrance at the Church of Our Lady of Pity, organized by the University of Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island.
Bishop Peter Byrne, episcopal vicar of Staten Island, celebrated the Mass this year and gave the homily.
Archbishop Borys Gudziak, Bishop A. Elias Zaidan, and Sean Callahan released a statement calling on delegates and policymakers attending the conference to remember the poor and vulnerable in their deliberations.
