Dominican Sisters Offer Living Space and Volunteer Opportunity to Young Grads

OSSINING – The Center at Mariandale in Ossining, founded on the mission of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, is offering graduate students an opportunity for room and board in exchange for 15-20 hours per week of service.

Accepted applicants will live at the Hope Volunteer Community at the Center at Mariandale in Ossining. The 11-month program begins the third week of August and ends in mid-July of the following year. One can apply to renew their participation for a second year.

Join the HOPE Volunteer Community! Through a flexible schedule that allows balance of graduate studies and volunteer commitments, HOPE Volunteers live and serve at the Center at Mariandale while engaging in the Dominican charism.

  • Live in community on a designated wing of the main retreat house
  • Demonstrate openness to spiritual life, one that integrates ecological and social justice priorities
  • Serve the Center 15-20 hours a week through helping facilitate retreats, gardening, offering hospitality to guests, serving the poor and vulnerable at local community-based agencies
  • Attend opening retreat, training, and two other retreats in the course of the year
  • Participate in community prayer and spirituality discussions

Founded by the Dominican Sisters of Hope, the Center at Mariandale is a spiritual retreat center with care of the Earth as its central tenet. The center offers programs and events focusing on spirituality and love for Nature and the Earth. The Center at Mariandale sponsors retreats and programs in numerous areas, including spirituality, contemplative practices, social and environmental justice, interfaith dialogue, the arts, wellness of body, mind, and spirit, and more. The Dominican Sisters have long been proponents of education. They also founded Mount Saint Mary College, in October of 1959, with the Dominican Pillars of service, community, study, and spirituality as their guide.
