WHITE PLAINS — Archbishop Stepinac High School announced Tuesday that Matt Butler has been named the new head varsity lacrosse coach.

Previously an assistant coach of the Stepinac team, Butler’s promotion follows the resignation of James Goldmann, whose remarkable 14-year tenure culminated in Stepinac’s first-ever state championship this past season, when the Crusaders clinched the title with a 13-10 win against Kellenberg Memorial High School. Butler and Goldmann are both Stepinac alumni.

“We congratulate James Goldmann on his leadership that set a new standard for excellence, not just within our lacrosse program but throughout Stepinac,” adding: “We sincerely thank him for his contributions to our school and community,” Rev. Thomas Collins (Class of ’79), president of Stepinac, said.

Goldmann led his alma mater’s team to 142 total wins as well as several championship titles including in 2013 (CHSAA “A” Downstate); 2014 (CHSAA “A” City); 2022 (CHSAA “AA” City) and in 2024 the top honor—the state trophy.  In 2023, the Crusaders earned the school’s first lacrosse national ranking, finishing #17 for the season. Goldmann was also honored as CHSAA Coach of the Year in 2013.

“Matt’s appointment ensures a seamless transition and a commitment to the program’s continued success. His dedication and experience will continue to inspire our program,” said Mike O’Donnell, director of athletics and head football coach.
