Many people aren’t aware that Manhattan’s famed Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has a special connection to the Catholic parish of St. Catherine of Siena across the street.

Both are united by the life and work of Rose Hawthorne, daughter of novelist Nathanial Hawthorne.

In the summer of 1896, Rose trained to become a nurse when the cancer center was known as the New York Cancer Hospital.

On Monday, the eve of the 98th anniversary of her death, St. Catherine of Siena parish held a Mass of Thanksgiving for her life and legacy.

See our report in the video above.

The vigil is hosted each January by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Pro-Life Secretariat, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., and The Catholic University of America’s Office of Campus Ministry.
