Born in Brooklyn, Deacon Weir earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer with the US Merchant Marines during WWII

Deacon John Edward Weir, 101, of Cortlandt Manor, entered eternal life peacefully on July 4, 2024.

He was born in Brooklyn, on January 14, 1923, to John and Louise (Balassi) Weir, (deceased). He married his childhood sweetheart Helen T. Emmet (deceased) on May 18, 1946. He was predeceased by his sister, Maria (Vincent) Strockis, a son,

Christopher John Weir, and two grandsons, Thomas & Michael Kevin Weir.

He is survived by Stephen (Jane), Patricia (Charles) Deierlein, Regina Weir, John (Jeanmarie), and Barbara (Philip) Liebergall. Deacon John also is survived by 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and four great, great-grandchildren.

Deacon Weir attended Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn. He earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer with the US Merchant Marines during WWII. Following his military service, he was employed by Manufacturer’s Trust. He was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking. In 1953, he joined the staff of Seabury Press as comptroller, was later appointed treasurer in 1963, and was vice-president until retiring in 1984.

Deacon Weir was ordained as a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of New York on May 20, 1977, by Cardinal Terence Cooke. He served in St. Ursula Church in Mount Vernon until he moved to Southbury, Connecticut in 1986.

While at St. Ursula Church, Deacon Weir served as cubmaster of Pack 37 and was also a member of the Religious Relations Committee of the Hutchinson River Council and helped many of the scouts achieve their religious awards. This service earned him the Saint George Award from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.

Eventually, Deacon Weir moved back to New York and resided in the Seabury (Yorktown Assisted Living). While there for many years, he held communion services for both the Assisted Living & Memory Units. He also ministered to his Jewish brethren by offering Sabbath services.

Deacon Weir was an accomplished artist and sold his paintings to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. He had a passion for classical music and old-time movies. He enjoyed playing chess and doing the New York Times crossword puzzles.
