WASHINGTON – Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley, OFM Cap., 80, from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Boston, and has appointed Bishop Richard G. Henning of Providence, as his successor.

The resignation and appointment were publicized in Washington, D.C. on August 5, 2024, by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

The Archdiocese of Boston is comprised of 2,465 square miles in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and has a total population of 4,496,207 of which 1,794,260, are Catholic.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan expressed his happiness with Bishop Denning’s appointment and wished Archbishop O’Malley well.

“The Holy Father has chosen well in appointing Long Island native, Bishop Richard Henning, an outstanding priest and bishop, as the next Archbishop of Boston!  I got to know Bishop Henning well during his years as an auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, where the bishops of New York State relied on his wise counsel and pastoral insights. I am sure that the faithful people of Providence will miss him deeply.

“I must share a word of gratitude to my brother, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, as he begins his well-earned retirement from his role as Archbishop of Boston.  For decades he has been a leader for the Church in the United States, and I know that we can look forward to his continued presence with us, as he continues his loving service to Jesus and His Church.”

The Catholic Channel (Channel 129) on SiriusXM radio will also broadcast the Mass, beginning at 4 a.m. EDT., with Father Dave Dwyer and Lino Rulli providing on-location coverage.
