A four-day contemplative symposium on St. Elizabeth of the Trinity opens Thursday afternoon, featuring eight keynote speakers and six other presenters at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers.
“St. Elizabeth of the Trinity: The Mystery of Christian Prayer” will be held from August 8-11, offering talks and opportunities to learn more about contemplative prayer and prayer life.
Featured speakers include Bishop John O. Barres, STD, JCL, the fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre (Long Island); Father Ignatius John Schweitzer, OP, a co-founder of symposium organizer the Dominican House of Prayer (DHOP): “The Paradox of Solitude and Communion in Our Life with the Triune God”; and Julie Enzler, whose topic is “Heaven by Faith: Contemplatives in the World.”
St. Elizabeth of the Trinity was a Discalced Carmelite sister from France. She joined a Carmelite monastery near her home when she was 21, and died five years later from Addison’s Disease. She was canonized in 2016. Her feast day is November 8.
The symposium is organized by the DHOP, the public ministry of two Dominican priests and two Dominican lay leaders who together wish to share their experience and understanding on prayer and the spiritual life with the world at large. DHOP offers homilies, conferences, and brief discussions on various topics related to Catholic spirituality and devotional practice in its YouTube channel and retreats online and on site.
Online ticket sales have ended. For information, contact St. Joseph’s Seminary at (914) 968-6200.
In our Gospel today, Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter gives a correct but incomplete answer. It’s a very personal question, and our Lord is asking for a very personal response.
