As this year’s bitter winter continues, residents of Staten Island may find a bit of warmth, with the National Grid Foundation making a $250,000 donation to Catholic Charities of Staten Island to reduce heating costs.

Beginning on February 20 and continuing until all funds are disbursed, low to moderate-income Staten Island individuals and families can apply to receive assistance in reducing or clearing their heating bills, regardless of the type of heat their homes use.

On Thursday, February 20, in front of about 60 regular users of the Anderson Avenue Adult Center, Dr. Robert Simmons III, vice president of US Social Impact and executive director of the National Grid Foundation, presented Cheryl Attalla, CEO of Catholic Charities of Staten Island, with his organization’s contribution.

“It’s important to keep in mind that as we understand the cold months, as we understand the challenges of community, that you know that National Grid and the National Grid Foundation are here. We’re here to listen, we’re here to learn, we’re here to provide the support that’s necessary so that we all can live better lives that we all deserve,” Simmons said in his remarks.

Attalla thanked the National Grid Foundation members who were in attendance, along with local elected officials and Catholic Charities of Staten Island staff, before expressing her gratitude for the foundation’s support.

“On behalf of the many individuals and families whose lives will be touched by this grant, we offer our deepest thanks. Your support ensures that people in our community will not have to face their challenges alone. You are providing more than just financial aid – you are providing hope, dignity, and the promise of a brighter future. Thank you, National Grid Foundation, for your generosity and for standing with us to support the people of Staten Island. Together, we are making a profound difference.

There is no shortage of need on Staten Island – for heating assistance, food security, and other services, Attalla told The Good Newsroom in an interview.

“There is a need everywhere on Staten Island. The North Shore community on Staten Island tends to be where the most need is. However, there is a need Island-wide. There are a lot of folks just like you and me that fall into hard times, and this grant would absolutely be of assistance,” she said.

Those wishing to apply for the grant may visit the program’s dedicated webpage. Applicants who have limited or no internet access or have trouble completing the application can contact a Catholic Charities of Staten Island case worker for assistance at (718) 984-1500.
