Saint Peter’s Basilica, built over the tomb of the first pope and prince of the apostles, stands at the heart of the Catholic Church. One of the holiest sites in Christendom, its sacred beauty and spiritual grandeur can now be explored from anywhere through an extraordinary virtual tour.

Launched by the Fabbrica di San Pietro in November 2024, ahead of the Jubilee Year, the interactive experience offers a stunning, high-definition, 360-degree view of the interior of the basilica. Whether you have visited in person or are seeing it for the first time, this virtual tour offers a powerful way to experience the beauty, history, and sacredness of Saint Peter’s from anywhere.

The AI-enhanced tour is the result of a partnership between the Vatican and Microsoft.

The experience begins at the basilica’s main entrance, allowing users to “walk” through the central nave, pausing at major altars, side chapels, and architectural marvels along the way. You can navigate freely or follow curated highlights, including:

  • Michelangelo’s Pietà, located just inside the entrance
  • The Baldacchino by Bernini above the main altar
  • The Tomb of Saint Peter, beneath the altar at the heart of the basilica
  • Monumental mosaics and inscriptions, each rich in theology and artistry

Users can zoom in to examine intricate details and read about each feature in multiple languages. The smooth interface makes it accessible for all ages, from students to pilgrims to art lovers.

This is more than just a virtual tour. It is an invitation to prayer and wonder. For Catholics who may never be able to travel to Rome, or for those looking to deepen their appreciation of the Church’s spiritual and artistic heritage, this tool is a true gift.

During these relaxing summer months, virtual pilgrims can take a moment to step inside this sacred space. No passport needed.

Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, did not confirm the documents' authenticity but said they "presumably concern part of one of the documents on which the decision was based" to restrict use of the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass.
