Brother John Gennaro Sullo, CFC entered eternal life on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Brother John Gennaro Sullo lived a life of dedication and service to God, the Church, the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, to his family, colleagues, friends, and students. He touched the lives of so many people over his 58 years as a Christian Brother. He was known by his religious name, Gennaro. John was born on December 31, 1944, to Jack Sullo and Mary Toscano. He entered the congregation on September 16, 1967; made first vows on September 8, 1969; and final vows on June 21, 1975. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School and James Monroe High School in the Bronx. At Iona College, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. Two master’s degrees were earned: one at Middlebury College in Spanish and one from Catholic University in Latin American History. Gennaro received a doctorate in non-public school administration from Fordham University as well. 

His professional career spanned more than 50 years of dedication and service to Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey; Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island; Tampa Catholic High School in Tampa, Florida; Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island; Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame High School in Miami, Florida; Bishop Gibbons High School, Schenectady; All Hallows High School in Bronx; Iona College in New Rochelle; as director of mission education in the Eastern American Province in New Rochelle; and assistant to the director of the Office of Educational Services in New Rochelle. Brother Gennaro’s many gifts and talents were used to better the lives of thousands of individuals over 50 years. His roles as teacher, administrator, president, director, and colleague made each institution a better place. 

Brother Gennaro was blessed by God with a great intellect and a spiritual life, but perhaps he may be best known for his great love for God’s people. Brother Gennaro’s masterful social skills, friendliness, engaging personality, and influence in the lives of so many people will be remembered and appreciated by all who know him.

Brother will lie in repose on Tuesday, August 5, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the chapel of Bergen Catholic High School, 1040 Oradell Ave., Oradell, New Jersey 07649.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, August 6, at 10 a.m. at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 300 Elm St., Oradell, New Jersey 07649.

Interment will be at Christian Brothers Cemetery, 1850 Route 9W, West Park, New York 12493.

Archbishop Timothy Broglio underscored the importance of prayer and renewed efforts toward universal nuclear disarmament and lasting peace.
