Sister M. Daria McGinn served as a teacher in Nyack

Sister M. Daria McGinn, IHM, who taught at St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, died Dec. 27 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa.. She was 104 years old.

Sister Daria was a teacher at St. Ann from 1948 to 1956. Over the decades, she also taught at schools in Brooklyn, Oneida, NY, Scranton, Pa, Binghamton, NY, and Dunmore, Pa. And she was a teacher’s aide in Exeter, Pa. 

Born in Jamaica, Queens, and given the name Mary, she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1938 and made her final vows in 1944. She held a bachelor’s degree in elementary education/English from Marywood College in Scranton, and a master’s in education/social science from the University of Detroit.

Sister Daria also served on the support staff of the Marian Convent in Scranton, from 2003 to 2006, and at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, from 2006 to 2014, where she also served as a prayer minister until the time of her death. She is survived by nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins. 

Funeral services were private. Burial was at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.
