Archbishop Stepinac High School Assistant JV Football Coach Gary Farmer died suddenly Sunday after falling ill at a basketball game, the school announced Monday via social media.
“It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Coach Gary Farmer. Coach Farmer was a member of Stepinac’s Football Program.
“Coach Farmer was one of the people who understood the significance and importance of his work with young people. He wanted the best for his players and wanted to see them develop and grow, win or lose. He was a role model. He will be missed.
“We pray for the repose of his soul and for God’s mercy and care for his family and loved ones during this time of grief. Rest In Peace, Coach.”
Witnesses said Farmer began feeling ill during post-game celebrations following Stepinac’s basketball game against Cardinal Hayes High School at St. John’s University in Queens. Farmer lost consciousness but could not be revived.
Farmer had been a member of the Stepinac coaching staff for more than 10 years.
Visitation and funeral arrangements were not available at press time.
