Cardinal Timothy Dolan called on Catholics and other people of faith to stand up for religious freedom in the United States — or risk losing it. “Thursday is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the founders of the church in Rome, who died rather than betray their conscience,” Cardinal Dolan wrote in an editorial published Thursday in The New York Post. “It also marks the end of Religious Freedom Week, when we honor our first
and most cherished freedom — which is how the founders saw it and why
they had it lead off the Bill of Rights,” Cardinal Dolan continued. Religious Freedom Week takes place each year in the United States from June 22-29. During that time, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) “invites Catholics to pray, reflect, and act to promote religious freedom.”
In his editorial, Cardinal Dolan provided numerous examples of U.S. government interference and restriction of religious practices.
“All of these chilling illustrations of threats to our ‘first and most cherished liberty’ — and there are more — stem from the belief that government has the right to total allegiance from its citizens, and that their behavior must bend the knee to the state, regardless of their faith,” Cardinal Dolan wrote.
