Sister Bernadette served as district superintendent for schools for the archdiocese

Sister Bernadette Hannaway, OSU (aka Catherine Bernadette), entered eternal life on August 12, 2023, at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings on Hudson. Born in New York in 1935, she was the daughter of Mary Callaghan and John Hannaway.
Sister Bernadette received her early education in the Bronx and then graduated from the College of New Rochelle, Catholic University, and Manhattan College. She professed her vows on January 16, 1957, She was a dedicated educator for her entire life, serving on the faculty of Blessed Sacrament, St. Angela’s, Ursuline School, St. Joseph’s, Malone. She served as district superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of New York, associate superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Rockville Center, administrator of the Mount Saint Ursula Speech Center, director of religious education, and pastoral associate at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, City Island.
She served on several boards, including: the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula; Mount Saint Ursula Speech Center; Ursuline Academy, Wilmington, Delaware; and College of New Rochelle. Within the Ursuline community, Sister Bernadette was a member of the board of directors of the Marian Residence, assistant provincial and director of planning and education for the Ursuline Province, and provincial secretary. She held various other positions within the Archdiocese of New York. Sister Bernadette celebrated her 60-year jubilee in 2017.
Sister Bernadette is predeceased by her parents, Mary and John, and her sisters, Sister Therese, SC, and Margaret Wade. She is survived by her brother, John, and his wife, sister, Anne Walker, and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be August 17, from 3-5 PM, with a prayer service at 4:15. Funeral Liturgy will be Friday, August 18, 2023, at 10:30 AM. All services will be held at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Ave, New Rochelle.
