 In his video this morning, Cardinal Dolan explains why nine days of prayer are called a novena.

That’s what the Apostles and our Blessed Mother did when Jesus returned to Heaven on Ascension Thursday. They prayed for the gift of the Holy Spirit for nine days, the first novena.
