Top basketball prospect Johnuel “Boogie” Fland likely won’t commit until early 2024

Johnuel "Boogie" Fland (center) poses with his award for most valuable player of the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association playoffs in March 2023.
One of the nation’s top high school basketball players is narrowing his list of potential college choices, multiple reports indicated this week.

Johnuel “Boogie” Fland, who will begin his senior year at Archbishop Stepinac High School in September, indicated his preferences are now confined to Kentucky, Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Maryland, University of Connecticut (UConn), and local favorite St. John’s University in Queens, according to Sports Illustrated.

In June, Fland visited the University of Indiana, having previously made stops at Michigan and North Carolina. In September, the six-foot, three-inch point guard will head to the University of Kentucky, thought to be at the top of his list. Fland has already received a scholarship offer from Kentucky’s program, headed by Coach John Calipari.

Although rankings vary, Fland is considered the top or second-best point guard among class of 2024 prospects, and in the top 10 overall. ESPN rated him number six overall, and second among point guards.

It’s been a busy summer for Fland. The most valuable player of the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association playoffs in March, Fland maintained his status as a top recruiting target at both Nike’s Peach Jam Elite Youth Basketball League in early July. In addition to playing for the Stepinac Crusaders, he also plays for the ProScholars Athletics Cardinals (PSA Cardinals) of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) at non-scholastic tournaments around the country.
In a repeat three-peat, the Crusaders finish the season on a very high note.
