And Then There Were Three...Stepinac Basketball Prospect Fland Narrows Choices
By: The Good Newsroom
Alabama, Indiana, and Kentucky are the remaining potential landing spots for the nationally-ranked point guard
Johnuel “Boogie” Fland, now a senior at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, will move on to one of three universities upon graduation: Alabama, Indiana, or Kentucky, 247 Sports reported Thursday.
The six-foot-three-inch Fland decided against a visit to the University of Maryland — a school he had designated as one of his top eight earlier this year — in order to focus on the three highly-regarded collegiate basketball programs.
This latest statement is also bad news for four other schools in which Fland had expressed interest: the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina, St. John’s University, and the University of Connecticut.
Alabama Coach Nate Oats, Indiana Coach and former New York Knicks player and coach Mike Woodson, and Kentucky Coach John Calipari all participated in Stepinac’s recent St. Ignatius School 2023 New York Coaches Clinic, and all three visited Fland at home separately, in line with NCAA recruiting practices. Fland has also visited all three universities, having just returned from Alabama. He has not set a date to make a final decision, 247 Sports reported.
Fland and his Archbishop Stepinac teammates won the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Boys’ Basketball “AA” title in March, defeating the Bronx’s Cardinal Hayes High School. Fland told 247 Sports that winning another city championship was on his list of goals for his final year as a high school player.
