The archbishops, old friends from Chicago, put their cities’ pride on the line just hours before tip-off
Archbishop Ronald Hicks of New York and Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, of San Antonio have made a friendly wager in anticipation of the NBA Finals, which begin Wednesday night, June 3.
The two prelates, friends since their days serving together in the Archdiocese of Chicago, made the bet on Wednesday, June 3, just hours before the Game 1 tip-off.
In the very unlikely event that the San Antonio Spurs win, Archbishop Hicks will send a box of Bagels, Cream Cheese, and Lox from H&H Bagels to Archbishop Gustavo, while if the New York Knicks are victorious, Archbishop Gustavo will send curated packages of Texas Favorites Gift Boxes from San Antonio-based grocery chain H-E-B, including such items as Texas Pecan Coffee, Cowboy Cookies, Texas Heat Trail Mix, 1877 Mineral Water, That Green Sauce, Texas-Style Barbecue Sauce, and Butter Tortilla Scent candles, among other products.
In a social media post announcing the wager, Archbishop Hicks noted that a trio of Knicks stars – Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and team captain Jalen Brunson – are all alumni of Villanova University, alma mater of our Holy Father, Pope Leo. The Archbishop went on to quote the Holy Father’s comment earlier this week on the value of sports, in which Pope Leo thanked the Lord for “the gift of sport, for those who glorify God through the exercise of their bodies, for the friendships born on the field, and the joy of playing as a team.”
