Some of the leading figures in New York City’s Hispanic community gathered at the Terence Cardinal Cook Health Care Center in Manhattan Wednesday evening, to be honored by ArchCare, the continuing care community of the Archdiocese of New York.

The event was part of the continuing care community of the Archdiocese of New York’s observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 until October 15.

ArchCare was represented by CEO and President Scott LaRue; Jason Hutchens, senior vice president of residential services; and Dr. Walid Michelen, senior vice president for clinical planning and innovation and ArchCare’s chief medical officer.

Among those representing the Cardinal Cooke Center in person was Carlos “Charlie” Diaz, senior community relations liaison, who was born at the Center in its previous incarnation as Flower-Fifth Avenue Hospital. It became the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in 1984.

Honored in person were: Robert J. Rodriguez, New York Secretary of State; Diana Ayala, Deputy Speaker of the New York City Council; Lorraine Cortes, commissioner of the New York City Department for the Aging; Anthony Miranda, New York City Sheriff; and Adolf Carrion Jr., commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Also honored but unable to attend were Dr. Lester Martinez-Lopez, assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs; Edwin Caban, commissioner of the New York Police Department; and Victor G. Alicea, president of Boricua College.

“Be not afraid,” the Archbishop of New York told prisoners and staff during a pre-Christmas Mass.
