Bishop Dunn Memorial School (BDMS) saw a sweet turnout for its 7th Annual Cupcake 5k hosted on the Mount Saint Mary College campus, Sunday, September 21.
The event raised $18,500 for BDMS student scholarships.
More than 240 participants took part in the Hudson Valley’s sweetest race, including Mount President Dr. Robert Gervasi and Vice President of Academic Affairs Evan Merkhofer. Vice President for Mission and Ministry and Campus Chaplain Father Gregorie Fluet was also in attendance, cheering on the runners.
The day kicked off with a Mini Cupcake Run for children 10 and under, followed by the main 5k run/walk. As the name suggests, there were plenty of cupcakes to be enjoyed after the race.
Thirty local businesses and several student groups chipped in to make the day a success. These volunteers include the Mount’s Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, Mount nursing students, and the college’s track and field team. Skywalker and the team at K104.7 also set the tone with games, music, and more. The combined effort between the Mount and BDMS highlights a long-standing and vital relationship between the schools.
BDMS Principal Nancy Benfer addressed the significance of this partnership, saying, “It’s not just our families at Bishop Dunn, but it’s the entire Newburgh [and] Mount Saint Mary College community that comes together to support this event. And it’s all about scholarships for the kids.”
Assistant principal Melissa Broe added, “I look forward to meeting all the families, all the students, [and] potential students…and watching the kids have fun.”
