Bishops Robert Brennan and James Massa respectively were elected chairs of Cultural Diversity in the Church and Doctrine
Two Brooklyn bishops will lead committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) after being elected to their positions, Brooklyn-based Catholic news publication The Tablet reported Tuesday.
Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, and Most Reverend James Massa, Ph.D., D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn and rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, are set to become heads of the Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church, and the Committee on Doctrine, respectively, the report said.
The USCCB is currently holding its Fall Plenary Assembly in Baltimore, which concludes Thursday, November 16. Each bishop will serve as chairman-elect for one year, and then serve two more years as chairman, beginning at the close of the 2024 Fall Plenary Assembly.
Born in the Bronx on June 7, 1962, Bishop Brennan became the eighth Bishop of Brooklyn on November 30, 2021.
A native of Jersey City, New Jersey, Bishop Massa currently serves as the rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary and College in Yonkers.
