The central offices of the Archdiocese of New York will move in 2025
The headquarters of the Archdiocese of New York will move away from its current location in the Terence Cardinal Cooke Catholic Building at 1011 First Avenue, Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced on Tuesday.
“It has been apparent for several years, however, that ‘1011’ no longer made sense as our home,” Cardinal Dolan wrote in a letter sent to the faithful of the archdiocese, archdiocesan clergy, and staff. He cited maintenance costs, advances in technology, and “a desire to be closer to the people we serve throughout the archdiocese.”
“As a result, after broad consultation and careful research, a new location has been found at 488 Madison Avenue, next to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, that will house the central offices of the archdiocese,” Cardinal Dolan wrote.
Relocation will not begin until sometime in 2025, Cardinal Dolan wrote. The 488 Madison Avenue site has a history with the Church in New York. “It was at one time the location of a Catholic Charities orphanage, as well as the former home of Cathedral College Seminary. Its location adjacent to St. Patrick’s Cathedral is another ‘plus’ in its favor,” he wrote.
There have been no decisions on what will happen to the 1011 First Avenue building, Cardinal Dolan wrote.
The 20-story New York Catholic Center opened in 1973, and was later renamed for Terence Cardinal Cooke, who had overseen its construction. The building also houses St. John the Evangelist parish. Cathedral High School, which had occupied space in the building since 1973, began its first academic year in its new location in September 2023.
