Catechists from across the Archdiocese of New York were honored Sunday, February 1, 2026, during the annual Catechetical Certification Recognition Ceremony at the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown. 

Hosted by the Office of Youth Faith Formation, the ceremony recognized certified catechists who completed ArchNY Lab Catechist Formation Levels One and Two, directors and coordinators who completed Basic Leadership Training, and catechists marking 25 years or more of teaching the Catholic faith to young disciples. 

Before awards were presented, the gathering first turned to prayer. His Excellency Bishop John Bonnici led those present in prayer and Eucharistic Adoration, grounding the celebration in thanksgiving to God. 

In his homily, Bishop Bonnici emphasized that catechesis is not simply a task, but a vocation rooted in witness and relationship. 

“It’s not simply about technique. It’s not a job. It’s not an obligation merely fulfilled. It’s a vocation. It’s a calling,” Bishop Bonnici said. “You are called to be witnesses before you are teachers. Your faith is transmitted through relationship and lived example.” 

Organizers said the ceremony was not only about recognition, but about reminding the faithful that God continues to call men and women to serve as catechists and faith formation leaders in parishes throughout the archdiocese. 

Robin Klueber, coordinator in the Office of Youth Faith Formation, spoke about the vital role catechists play in the future of the Church. 

“Our catechists are extremely important to the future of our faith, the tradition of Catholicism, and family values,” Klueber said. She noted that strengthening the passing on of the faith requires catechists who are both well-formed and committed for the long term. 

Klueber also highlighted the archdiocese’s commitment to supporting catechists through a variety of formation opportunities, including online, asynchronous, and in-person courses. 

“We’re giving them the gratitude, the personal hug, the handshake, and the smile, and saying thank you for what you do, not only for the kids of today, but for the future of our faith,” she said. 

The Office of Youth Faith Formation said it remains committed to providing the training, resources, and support catechists need to help spread the Good News and the love of God to future generations.
