On this Friday of the Second Week of Lent, The Good Newsroom continues its Lenten series “Fridays at the Foot of the Cross” with a reflection on the Second Word of Christ: “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

In silence, we reflect on this moment from Calvary when Jesus speaks mercy to the repentant thief, Dismas, revealing the power of repentance and trust even at the hour of death.

This installment is paired with a teaching from St. Catherine of Siena, who writes in The Dialogue: “I am the thief and You have been punished for me.”

Together, Scripture and the witness of the saints draw us more deeply into the mystery of Christ’s Passion.

As we continue our Lenten journey, we remain at the foot of the Cross, placing our hope in Christ, who alone is our salvation.

Monsignor Luke Sweeney, S.T.L., is the dean of seminarians and professor of Catholic social teaching at St. Joseph's Seminary. We spoke with him about the next generation of priests, the upcoming comprehensive exams at the seminary, and how we can respect God's creation.
