Dear Friends of Catholic Education:
In the spirit of the Jubilee Year of Hope, a time of reflection and renewal, we must share with you a difficult but necessary decision. After much prayerful consideration, we regret to announce that Mount Carmel-Holy Rosary School will close at the end of the 2024–2025 academic year.
This decision follows the Archdiocese of New York’s School Viability Study, which identified the ongoing challenges of maintaining sustainability in enrollment and financial health. Despite the tireless efforts of our dedicated school community—families, staff, and supporters—our projected enrollment for the 2025–2026 school year stands at just 63 students, a number that falls below what is needed to ensure the school’s long-term viability.
We understand how deeply this news impacts our families, alumni, staff, and the entire neighborhood. Mount Carmel-Holy Rosary has been a cherished institution for generations, offering a place of faith, learning, and community. The closure of the school is a painful loss, but it is also an opportunity for renewal and hope. Just as the Jubilee calls us to reflect on past blessings and step forward in faith, we trust that new opportunities for growth and community will emerge from this challenging moment.
To support affected families, every student will be offered a seat at another Catholic school. During this transition, Christopher Quito, Enrollment Director, will work directly with families to provide guidance and assistance. Anthony Biscione, Regional Superintendent for the Manhattan School Region, will also be available for non-enrollment-related concerns. Additionally, a School Fair will be held, where nearby Catholic schools—including Our Lady Queen of Angels, St. Charles Borromeo, and Our Lady of Lourdes—will be present to help families find the best fit for their children’s continued education.
We are grateful for the support and love our school community has received over the years. The faith in Mount Carmel-Holy Rosary School has touched the lives of many, and we believe the legacy of this school will live on in the hearts of all who have been a part of it.
Though this chapter is ending, the spirit of Mount Carmel-Holy Rosary will continue to inspire and guide us. We thank you for your understanding and continued prayers during this transition.
Sincerely, in Christ,
Sister Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools
