By: The Good Newsroom
Iona Prep presents “The Lightning Thief” April 21-22; Stepinac sends up “Jersey Boys” April 28-29, and May 4, 6, and 7
Two top Catholic high schools are preparing their spring theater productions, with one show going up this weekend.
Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle’s production of “The Lightning Thief” opens Friday, April 21, with an additional performance on the evening of Saturday, April 22. Both performances begin at 7 p.m.
In the play, Greek gods can be finicky. Such is the life of Percy Jackson and the other children of Camp Half-Blood. Part men and women, part immortal, they can see a world beyond the human eye. The Iona Prep Players will pull back the curtain ― or rather raise it on the William J. Tully Gymnasium stage ― as the Gael thespians present the theatrical adaptation of Rick Riordan’s “The Lightning Thief.”
The cast and crew feature students from Holy Child, Maria Regina, and The Ursuline School, along with Iona Prep men. The show is directed by alumnus Jason Summers ’98 and the Prep Players are moderated by Mr. Charles Sloat ’84, P’15,’17. Tickets are $20 and are available at the door or online at www.ionaprep.org/prepplayers.
Archbishop Stepinac High School of White Plains will make a bit of theater history in late April, when it becomes the first time that the highly popular, jukebox musical “Jersey Boys” will be performed by a high school group in the U.S.
With music by Bob Guadio, lyrics by Bob Crewe and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, “Jersey Boys” features classic rock songs: “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” ”Sherry,” “December, 1963 (Oh, What Night, ” Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” “Walk Like a Man,” ‘Who Loves You,” “Working My Way Back to You,” and “Rag Doll,” among others.
Leading the cast of the national high school premiere of “Jersey Boys” will be Calvin Lindo (Class of ’24) of Yonkers as Frankie Valli; Noah Collazo (Class of ’23) of Yonkers as Bob Gaudio; Ryan Diaz (Class of ’24) of New York City as Tommy DeVito and Jordan Prado (Class of ’24) of Yonkers as Nick Massi. It will be directed by Frank Portanova (Class of ’93) and produced by Keith Sunderland (Class of ’94).
There will be five performances at the school’s Major Bowes Auditorium, at 7 PM, Friday, April 28; Saturday, April 29; Thursday, May 4 and Saturday, May 6 and a 2 PM matinee, Sunday, May 7. Reserved seating tickets cost $20 and can be ordered only online via www.stepinac.org/showtickets.
