The Church of the Transfiguration was built in 1801. On August 31, 1815, a catastrophic fire devastated the area, destroying 35 houses and essentially the church, which was renovated in 1818, and is today listed as the second oldest Catholic church in New York City.
Jack Emery Kristensen and Ian Paul Christopher Mendoza were among 18 men from the Pontifical North American College ordained to the transitional diaconate on Oct. 1 at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
