Man Up New York Set for October 7 at Iona University
By: The Good Newsroom
This year’s speakers include Bishop Joseph Espaillat, Dr. Scott Hahn, Kevin Reilly, and more
The Archdiocese of New York’s Office of Adult Faith Formation will co-host the Man Up New York 2023 Conference on Saturday, October 7, at Iona University in New Rochelle.
In solidarity with the National Eucharistic Revival, we hope that through attending this experience men will be restored, renewed, and revived in their identity: men after the Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Speakers like world-renowned author and Scriptural scholar Dr. Scott Hahn, and others, with their words, witness, and practical wisdom, will help attendees to come to know Jesus more personally and bring Him to their different spheres of influence.
History of the Man Up Movement
Man Up is a men’s movement that began in Pennsylvania. It started in 2002 by a group of five men who saw a need for men to gather outside of Sunday Mass. They started a Gospel Reflection Group in Chester, Pennsylvania that now involves over 200 parishes and locations each week. These men come together not only to share the Gospel, but also to share practical wisdom on how to become better fathers, husbands, sons, and Catholics.
In 2008, lay men, priests, bishops, and the Archbishop of Philadelphia, started what is now known as Man Up Philly: the Men’s Spirituality Conference, under the leadership of Eustace Mita. This conference gathers inspirational speakers like former New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza and other dynamic Catholic men who share ways to live their faith in every area of life, including the home and workplace. Man Up is also hosted in New Jersey.
His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan saw a great opportunity for the Archdiocese of New York to partner with Man Up to set the men of New York on fire for Jesus Christ. Cardinal Dolan then connected the Archdiocese of New York’s Director of Adult Faith Formation, Elizabeth Guevara de Gonzalez, and the Director of Communications and Public Relations for the Office of the Superintendent of Schools, TJ McCormack, with Man Up Philly founder Eustace Mita in 2019 to begin preparations to host the conference in New York.
With the logistical expertise of the archdiocese’s Office of Special Projects and Events, the first Man Up New York conference was held at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie on Saturday, October 23, 2021. It was a sold-out event with over 400 men attending. Highlights included an inspiring keynote by Mike Piazza, shared wisdom from Cardinal Dolan, Eucharistic adoration, and Mass with a stirring homily by Father Giuseppe Maria Siniscalchi, CFR.
What to Expect at Man Up New York 2023
The purpose of Man Up is to deepen each participant’s relationship with Jesus. Through dynamic talks, witnesses, music, times of fellowship, and especially Liturgy, men will be energized and enabled to be better sons, fathers, brothers, and husbands. There will also be confessions, an exhibit of Eucharistic Miracles, and an opportunity to venerate the relics of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Saint Manuel Gonzalez Garcia. The attendees will be given resources to start or continue men’s groups at their parishes to keep the momentum of the conference going.
This year’s speakers include Dr. Scott Hahn, Bishop Joseph Espaillat, Kevin Reilly, and many more. The event will reach its summit with Mass and Eucharistic Adoration presided by Bishop Espaillat.
