Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle hosted current New York Giants tight end Chris Manhertz at its annual Father-Son Breakfast Sunday, March 23, at the Tully Gym.

Speaking to more than 200 boys, fathers, uncles, and grandfathers, Manhertz spoke about what it is like to play in the NFL, for the Giants in particular, and his personal journeys of faith and family in reaching the pinnacle of his profession.

The 11-year veteran has played 137 games with the Saints, Panthers, Jaguars, Broncos, and Giants, averaging 10.4 yards per reception. Manhertz attended nearby Cardinal Spellman in the Bronx and Canisius College in western New York. Uniquely, he only played basketball at Canisius and didn’t even begin training to play football until after college.

The Father-Son Breakfast first began as a community builder some 60 years ago with former owner and Iona Prep parent Wellington T. Mara (P’72,’75,’76,’78) getting Giants players to attend the breakfast when his sons attended during the 1970s. The now-annual event has been stewarded by longtime season-ticket holder and Iona Prep alumnus (Lower and Upper School), coach, and parent Christopher Fulco of Exit Realty.

On this week’s Conversation with Cardinal Dolan, Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Father Dave Dwyer discuss retreats, how information about the Pope’s health is shared, the Solemnity of the Annunciation, and more.
