The Archdiocese of New York Union of the Holy Name Society Executive Secretary Anthony Merolla, a lifelong resident of the Bronx, died on December 11, 2022. He was 93.

Mr. Merolla was born on December 28, 1928, in the Bronx to the late Luca and Maria (Cuomo) Merolla. On January 13, 1951, he married Marie (Tellone). She died on March 30, 2022. He served in the United States Army and retired as a Colonel from the Army Reserves. He was a parishioner of St. Clare’s Church and served as the Executive Secretary of the Archdiocesan Union of the Holy Name Society. As a young man, he attended Rosary rallies at the Polo Grounds, the former home of the New York Giants and New York Mets baseball teams.

He is survived by his son Anthony and his wife Deborah; his daughter Maryann and her husband Vincent; his daughter Patricia; his grandchildren Melissa, Lauren, Jennifer, Luke, Josette, Natalie, Dylan; great-grandchildren Jonathan, Christina, Adrianna, Bradley, Brielle, Brandon, Charlotte, and Jack; and his two brothers Joseph and his wife Jane, and Gerard and his wife Linda.

“Tony” oversaw the publishing and distribution of the Bulletin to parishes in the Archdiocese of New York. He also wrote numerous articles for the Bulletin and was a member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (Bronx, NY) Holy Name Society.

Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Clare’s Church in the Bronx on December 16, 2022. Entombment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
The event also marked the launch of the Appeal’s Giving Societies, recognizing donors who give at various distinguished levels.
