Deacon John J. Nash entered eternal life on September 18, 2025. He served at St. James the Apostle in Carmel for many years.

John J. Nash, 95, entered eternal life on September 18, 2025, at the Delaware Valley Personal Care Center with family at his side. He was the only son of Ethel (Wurm) and Walter H. Nash. He was born at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn on March 14, 1930. Many years later, three of his great-grandchildren were born in that place. He attended Holy Name Grammar School and graduated from St. Francis Preparatory School. He took classes at NYU.

During his high school years, he enjoyed working as an orderly at local hospitals. He was a medic in the National Guard for eight years. He held jobs at Ridgewood Savings Bank and Atlantic Zinc before working at IBM as a senior tax specialist for more than 37 years.

He married the love of his life, Doris M. Buchanan, on September 2, 1950. Their wedding rings were engraved 9/30/50 because he thought he was going to be called to serve in the Korean Conflict.

He was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife of 70-plus years, his son Kenneth (37), and his daughter Doris (60).

After moving to Carmel, he worked at Putnam Community Hospital on Saturdays and helped establish the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps and served as an EMT for more than 20 years.

While still working, John enrolled at St. Joseph’s Seminary in one of the first diaconate programs. He was ordained a permanent deacon on May 24, 1986, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. He had the best of both worlds, being an ordained deacon and a father. He served at St. James the Apostle in Carmel for many years. Upon retirement, he moved to Lords Valley, Pennsylvania, serving at St. John Neumann’s Parish. He also served as pastoral care director at Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis.

John is survived by his five remaining children: Karen (Bob) Villetto, John (Julie) Nash, Maryanne (Eric) Romanino, Michael (and former wife Ellen) Nash, and Mark (Alice) Nash. Also, 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

He enjoyed traveling with the many friends he made in Hemlock Farms. He taught us the love of God and the love of family. John will be greatly missed by all who have had the opportunity to know him.

The Knights of Columbus has always stood in solidarity with the Holy Father, recognizing in him a spiritual father who calls the world not to division, but to unity, not to conflict, but to peace. In this moment, we reaffirm that commitment with clarity and conviction.
