Obituary: Reverend Monsignor Nicholas J. Soares
By: The Good Newsroom
Incardinated into the Archdiocese of New York in 1980, Monsignor Soares served as pastor of St. Clement and St. Michael on Staten Island from 1988-2009, retiring but staying on as senior priest administrator in 2009

Born on June 21, 1934, and ordained in his native India on December 2, 1964, the Rev. Monsignor Nicholas J. Soares entered eternal life on December 4, 2024.
Incardinated into the Archdiocese of New York in 1980, he served as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Staten Island, 1979-1988. He was then pastor of St. Clement and St. Michael on Staten Island from 1988-2009, retiring but staying on as senior priest administrator in 2009. He was named a monsignor in 1990 and celebrated his golden jubilee in 2014.
In a December 4 Facebook post, the parish of St. Clement and St. Michael remembered their former pastor:
“This evening, our parish prays for the eternal rest and peace of Monsignor Nicholas J. Soares. He faithfully served this parish and built the congregation for close to 40 years. He came to the United States from Goa, India, and was a Salesian of Don Bosco. Monsignor Nick was a teaching priest before becoming associate pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in West Brighton, before being assigned pastor of the Parish of St. Clement and St. Michael in Mariners Harbor, where he faithfully served and impacted the greater Staten Island community for half a century. He passed away earlier today surrounded by love at the age of 90. Those parishioners who knew and loved him were fortunate to have learned from him and to have grown in faith under his teaching and guidance. He has surely touched many lives and families. Our parish center in the religious education building was appropriately named after him upon his retirement. He will forever serve as a reminder of Christ’s love; we hold him and his loved ones in our hearts. We were beyond lucky to have him lead this parish and cultivate the faith and sacraments of so many. May he rest in eternal peace and pray for us and our parish from his heavenly place.”
