Born in New York City on May 6, 1930, and ordained on May 28, 1955, the Rev. Monsignor Patrick J. Carney entered eternal life on November 6, 2024.

Monsignor Carney grew up in Manhattan, attending St. Gregory the Great parish on the Upper West Side. Following his ordination, served as parochial vicar at the Church of St. John in Clover in 1955; the Church of St. Joseph in Millbrook, 1955-1957; and the Church of St. Helena in the Bronx, 1957-1961.

Having earned a master’s degree in social work at Fordham University, Monsignor Carney then served on the staff of Catholic Charities in 1963-1964, before becoming county director of Catholic Charities for Dutchess and Ulster Counties from 1964 until 1973. During that time he was also temporary administrator of the Church of St. Jerome in the Bronx, where he later became pastor from 1973 until 1980. From 1980 to 1992, he served as pastor of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Manhattan. He was named a monsignor in 1990.

He retired in 2014, having served as senior priest administrator at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Hartsdale from 2005, having been pastor since July 1, 1998. In 2001, he presided over the 75th anniversary of the parish, where he also served locally as the chaplain of the Hartsdale Volunteer Fire Company. In 2003, he oversaw a significant renovation of the church building and its facilities. Monsignor Carney celebrated his golden jubilee in 2005.
