Sister Alice Conrad (Mary Frances), a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion for 71 years, entered eternal peacefully on October 27, 2024. She spent the majority of her ministry serving the people of Westchester County in schools, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and government, as well as daycare centers and summer camp programs
Sister Alice Conrad (Mary Frances), a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion for 71 years, died peacefully on October 27, 2024 at Greenwich Hospital.
Sister Alice was born in New York on July 28, 1931, the daughter of Harry and Frances Gallagher Conrad. Upon her graduation from Good Counsel College, where she was President of Student Council and earned a Bachelor’s Degree, Sister entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion on August 15, 1953. Sr. Alice continued her studies at Seton Hall University, earning a Masters Degree in Education. Sister also held three NYS Certifications in Education Administration.
Sr. Alice spent the majority of her ministry serving the people of Westchester County in schools, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and government, as well as daycare centers and summer camp programs.
Sister Alice taught elementary school in White Plains, Brewster, and the Bronx. Sister served as principal of Sacred Heart Elementary School in Hartsdale and John F. Kennedy High School in Somers. Additionally, Sr. Alice was City Clerk for the City of Rye, a member of the Divine Compassion Congregation Leadership team and Campus Administrator, and worked closely with developmentally disabled children and adults.
Upon her “retirement,” in the 1990s, Sr. Alice developed and continued to manage Shepherd’s Flock, which provides basic necessities of food, clothing and/or furniture for the poor, especially the working poor, who are not eligible for government assistance.
In 2019, Sr. Alice received top honors at Westchester County’s Senior Hall of Fame for her 50-plus years of service to the people of Westchester County.
In addition to her sense of humor and wisdom, Sr. Alice is remembered as a “connector” of people. Sister wholeheartedly loved her family, dear friends and beloved dogs, and always enjoyed a good story and a laugh. Sister Alice is survived by her Sisters of the Divine Compassion, her dear friends Mary Alice Cuccinell and Sr. Anne Kniphuisen, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, John, and her close friend Eugenia (Jean) Kelly.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place on November 1, with interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, White Plains. McMahon, Lyon, and Hartnett Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
