A lifelong educator, Sister Grace taught in numerous schools throughout the Archdiocese of New York

Sister Grace Gately, of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, entered eternal life on Sunday, October 1, 2023.

Sister Grace Gately, of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, entered eternal life on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 64 Presentation Way, New Windsor. She was 96 years old.

Sister Grace was born on May 11, 1927, in Brooklyn and joined the Sisters of the Presentation on February 2, 1945. She professed first vows on August 16, 1947 and final vows on August 16, 1950.  She graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School in Manhattan. She earned a BA degree in Education from Manhattan College in 1952, and an MS in 1958 and an MS Religious Education in 1982 from Fordham University.

Her ministries include teaching at Our Lady of Solace in Bronx; St. Michael’s High School, Manhattan; St. John, Goshen; Mount St. Joseph Academy, Newburgh; St. Bartholomew, Yonkers; and St. Helen and St. Rose of Lima in Queens.  She was a religious education coordinator and catechist instructor in several parishes in New York, New Jersey, and Florida.  During her years in retirement, she volunteered as a substitute teacher at St. Thomas of Canterbury, Cornwall, and at the Newburgh Ministry.

In addition to her family at the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sister Grace is survived by her nephews Patrick Martin, and Paul Martin and his wife Barbara. 

Sister Grace was predeceased by her parents, Martin Gately and Grace Gately.

Wake Services will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at Mount St. Joseph Chapel, 64 Presentation Way, New Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Mount St. Joseph. Burial will follow in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, New Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sr. Grace’s name to: Sisters of the Presentation, 84 Presentation Way, New Windsor, NY 12553.
