Sister Jane Mennis, OSU (aka Mary Andrew), entered eternal life peacefully at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings on Hudson, on January 10, 2024. Born in New York in 1930, she was the daughter of Evelyn and James Mennis. In 1952, Jane entered the Ursuline community after completing her studies at the College of New Rochelle.

Jane had a long and varied ministry. She was a faculty member of Ursuline schools in Bethesda, Maryland; Malone, New Rochelle, and the Bronx; and Athens, Greece.

She eventually became a director of religious education in the Bronx and a pastoral associate in Witherbee and Chateaugay.

As a sociology major, Jane deeply desired to help people in need. She volunteered at Moriah Shock State Prison in Mineville, and Bare Hill Correctional Facility in Malone. She also volunteered at the Children’s Center of Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.

Jane had a life-long love of learning, as evidenced by her attendance at workshops and courses in her field throughout her life.

Jane is survived by her brother, John, and her sister, Sr. Dorothy Mennis, RC. Her parents, Evelyn and James, predeceased her.

Visitation for Sr. Jane will be held on Wednesday, January 17, between 9:45 and 10:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. All services will be held at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10804.

The funeral liturgy will be on Facebook Live. Donations in her honor may be sent to the Ursuline Sisters development fund at the above address.

Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The annual Mass aims to recognize the wisdom, love, and guidance that older generations provide to their families and society.

"Work is good. And it will be better because of what you have done, what you are doing, and what you will do," Monsignor Kevin Sullivan said in his homily.
