Sister Madeleine McGill, OP, formerly Agnes Marie McGill, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for 74 years, entered eternal life on November 29, 2024.

Sister Madeleine was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to Francis and Agnes O’Connor McGill on September 22, 1927. She entered the Sisters of Saint Dominic on February 1, 1951, from St. Raymond’s Parish, Providence, Rhode Island, and professed her final vows on September 6, 1955.

Sister Madeleine was a quiet, devoted woman of unwavering faith whose life was dedicated to education at both the elementary and college level, and service to the community and her family. Her gentle spirit and commitment to others will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her academic journey was marked by ongoing learning. Sister Madeleine graduated from St. Xavier’s Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, then earned her degree from Dominican College in Orangeburg. She furthered her education with a master’s degree in reading from Rhode Island College. Her passion for reading enriched her teaching and allowed her to inspire a love for literature in her students.

Before embarking on her long career in education, Sister Madeleine served as a group mother at St. Dominic’s Home in Blauvelt from 1952 to 1957. This role marked the beginning of her lifelong commitment to ministry and care for others.

A true educator, Sister Madeleine shared her knowledge and inspired countless young minds with her patient but firm approach. Her teaching career began in 1957 at St. Pius School in the Bronx, followed by positions at St. Brendan’s School in Ormond Beach, Florida (1964-1969), Immaculate Conception School in Armenia, New York (1969-1970), St. Raymond’s School in Providence, Rhode Island (1970-1977; 1980-1983), and St. Phillip and James School in the Bronx (1977-1980). She concluded her teaching career at St. Paul’s School in Florida (1983-1987). Throughout her decades of teaching, she shaped the lives of many students, emphasizing the importance of faith, compassion, and service.

After many years in elementary education, she transitioned to roles in higher education, serving at Dominican University New York for 16 years. She served as assistant registrar and as a library clerk. Sister Madeleine’s final ministry was at the motherhouse, where she devoted herself to community service.

In addition to her religious family, Sister Madeleine is survived by her sister, Patricia Gannon, and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. Sister Madeleine was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Dorothy McKinnon, and her brothers, Frank, Thomas, and James McGill.

May Sister Madeleine rest in peace.
