Sister Mary Angela Smith entered eternal life on May 23, 2025. She served the Dominican Sisters of Hope in the finance office and as transportation coordinator at Mount Saint Mary Convent in Newburgh

Sister Mary Angela Smith, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, entered eternal life on May 23, 2025, at St. Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center in Caldwell, New Jersey. She was 95 years of age.

The daughter of the late Eldridge and Jeannette Beckert Smith, she was born October 8, 1929, in Washington, DC.

Sister Mary Angela entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh on September 8, 1953, making her First Profession on June 15, 1955, and Final Profession on August 21, 1958.

Sister Mary Angela Smith taught elementary school and performed several congregational services. Sister was an educator in schools in New Jersey, Florida, and North Carolina. Sister Mary Angela served the congregation in the finance office and as transportation coordinator at Mount Saint Mary Convent in Newburgh.

Sister enjoyed staying in contact with her family and many friends. A visit with her often included an update about those who had visited her or she had spoken to on the phone. With good humor, Sister easily took charge of events happening around her, earning the title “Mayor” both at Meadowview at the Wartburg, Mount Vernon and at St. Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center in Caldwell, New Jersey.

Sister Mary Angela is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Hope, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and her sisters Jean Woodhouse, Shirley Smith, Gladys Wolfe-Bernsen, and Louise Smith.

A celebration of Sister Mary Angela’s life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, in the Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh. The viewing will begin at 9:15 a.m. followed by a wake service at 10 a.m., and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Immediately following the liturgy, Sister will be buried in the Dominican Sisters of Hope Cemetery at Mount Saint Mary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brooks Funeral Home, Newburgh.

Two Sisters of Christian Charity who served at St. Mary's during Prevost's time were Sister Rosalie Erdmann, now a member of the Sisters of the Living Word, and Sister Leocadia Salbert, now known as Sister Jeanette Salbert, also of the Sisters of the Living Word.
