Sister Nancy Moroney, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Newburgh, entered eternal life on February 5, 2024, in Mt. Vernon. She was 98 years of age.

The daughter of the late James Stephen and Kathryn Fogarty Moroney, she was born June 9, 1925, in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Sister Nancy entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh on December 8, 1944, made her First Profession June 24, 1946, and Final Profession August 25, 1949. She earned her B.S. in elementary education and M.A. in guidance from Villanova University.

Sister Nancy began her ministry as an elementary school teacher in New Jersey, at Saint Mary School in Gloucester. She later taught at the following schools in New Jersey until 1977: Saints Peter and Paul School in Trenton, Holy Trinity School in Paterson, and Gloucester Catholic High School in Gloucester.

From 1977 to 1978 she worked in the Finance Office for the Dominican Sisters in Newburgh. Sister Nancy then spent one year in an administrative position at Mount Saint Mary High School in Newburgh. Other roles Sister Nancy served in include registrar’s office clerk at Mount Saint Mary College Newburgh, administrative assistant at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, and finance clerk for the Dominican Sisters in Newburgh. Her efficiency and attention to detail in those roles was a blessing.

In 1996, Sister Nancy served as bookstore clerk at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie until her retirement. Her presence as the sole remaining Sister at the high school surely made her a confidante to many students. After retiring, Sister moved to Cornwall, where she lived a number of years, eventually moving to Meadowview at Wartburg.

Sister Nancy loved to crochet; her creativity was amazing. She made many beautiful pieces, some of which were sold in the gift shop at Mariandale. When visiting Sister Nancy, you often found her crocheting beautiful items surrounded by neat baskets which held her planned future projects. She would readily put her crocheting aside, happy to become absorbed in conversation.

Sister Nancy is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Hope and her sister Jean Bouton and by her niece and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents James and Kathryn Moroney and by her brother Michael Moroney.

Sister was buried in the Dominican Sisters of Hope Cemetery on the grounds of Mount Saint Mary College.

Donations in Sisters memory can be made to the Dominican Sisters of Hope Development Office, 299 North Highland Ave, Ossining, NY 10562.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Brooks Funeral Home of Newburgh.
