With her smile, Sister Patricia could brighten a room and make people happy. She loved a good party where friends gathered and enjoyed each other’s company. She loved everything Irish, from music and dance, poetry and song, to the very country itself. Her times of travel always took her back to her favorite spot, Ireland.

Sister Patricia Padden, Sister Patrick Maureen, was born January 26, 1934, in Manhattan. She was one of four children, three daughters and one son of Patrick and Delia O’Malley Padden. Patricia attended Holy Name Elementary School and Blessed Sacrament High School before entering the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1951. Sister Patrick earned a B.A. in History from College (University) of Mount Saint Vincent and an M.A. in Education from Manhattan College. New York State awarded her Permanent Certification for Grades N-6 and as a reading specialist.

Sister Patricia’s ministry years in elementary education were spent in New York City and Westchester County schools. Her service took her to Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scarsdale, Saint Ignatius Loyola, Manhattan, Saint Joseph and Saint Denis, both in Yonkers, Visitation and Saint Anthony as teacher and assistant administrator, both in the Bronx. She was later available as a substitute teacher and teacher assistant.

A life of service

In semi-retirement, Sister Patricia volunteered at Saint Joseph Medical Center, Yonkers, as Front Desk Receptionist and in the Billing Department. Between 2002 and 2005, Sister Patricia returned to the classroom as a Religious Education teacher in Saint Margaret Parish, Pearl River, and a tutor in the East Ramapo School District.

In 2014, Sister Patricia was among the first group of retired sisters to move to the Kittay Senior Apartments in the Bronx. Here, she carried out a ministry of concern and connection for employees in need. She also assisted the Congregation’s Immigration Task Force by writing letters to politicians asking them to exercise their power to act or speak against legislative bills or declarations that unjustly penalized persons undeserved in society.

Her missions included Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scarsdale; St. Ignatius Loyola, Manhattan; St. Joseph School, Yonkers; St. Denis School, Yonkers; Visitation, Bronx; St. Anthony School, Bronx; Yonkers Community Action Program, Yonkers; St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Yonkers; St. Mary’s School; St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Yonkers; Fleetwood Elementary School, Chestnut Ridge; and St. Margaret’s Religious Education Program, Pearl River.

Sister Patricia entered eternal life on April 10, 2026, at Allen Pavilion-New York Presbyterian Hospital in the 75th year of commitment as a Sister of Charity of New York.

Sister Patricia, as you say yes to the invitation to enter the abundance of God’s eternal life, go with this Celtic prayer: “May God open to me every pass, Christ open to me every narrow way, each soul of holy man and woman in heaven be preparing for me my pathway.” Rest in everlasting peace.
