
Obituary: Sister Stephanie Nolan, OSU

Sister Stephanie taught in numerous schools throughout the Archdiocese of New York

Sister Stephanie Nolan, OSU (aka Mother Stephen), died peacefully at Andrus on Hudson, Hastings on Hudson, on September 19, 2023. Born in New York City on November 16, 1923, in November, she would have been 100 years old. Her parents were Mary Golden and Raymond Nolan.
She was educated in Ursuline schools, graduating from the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula, the College of New Rochelle, and Fordham University with English and Religious Studies degrees. Thus began a lifelong adventure in learning and teaching others to expand their horizons. She began her career at Saint Jerome’s, followed by Ursuline Academy Lower School, Bethesda, Maryland; Saint Angela’s; St. Joseph’s in Malone; The Ursuline School; and St. Joseph’s in Middletown.
In 1975, Sister Stephanie left the formal classroom for the field of religious studies, where she trained adults to teach young students and prepared young adults and adults who wished to embrace the Catholic religion. In this capacity, she used her talents at IHM, Scarsdale, and Immaculate Conception in Tuckahoe. She was also the director of sacramental formation for the Archdiocese of New York. Within the community, she served as principal, assistant superior, and pastoral minister for the Ursuline Marian Residence.
Sister Stephanie was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Raymond, and her sister Helen. She is survived by a nephew, Martin Kenney of Malverne, Pennsylvania.
Services for Sister Stephanie will be held at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Ave. New Rochelle, New York, 10804 on Monday, September 25, 2023. Calling hours are from 9:15 to 10:15 AM, with the Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:30 AM. Gifts in Sr. Stephanie’s name may be sent to the Ursuline Sisters Retirement Fund at the above address.
