Rev. John McCarthy To Serve Archbishop-designate Ronald Hicks' Secretary

Rev. Ryan Muldoon will serve as part-time secretary to the cardinal-emeritus, with continued duties as Director of the Archdiocesan Interfaith Office, and as adjunct professor at St. Joseph Seminary
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, after consultation with Archbishop-designate Ronald Hicks, is pleased to announce the following appointments:
The Rev. John McCarthy, currently on the faculty at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, will be secretary to the new archbishop, to begin January 1, 2026;
The Rev. Ryan Muldoon will serve as part-time secretary to the cardinal-emeritus, with continued duties as Director of the Archdiocesan Interfaith Office, and adjunct professor at St. Joseph Seminary.
Born in Brooklyn, Father McCarthy was ordained on May 14, 2005, by Cardinal Edward Egan. He served as parochial vicar first at St. Clare’s Parish on Staten Island from 2008 to 2011, and then in the same position at the Church of St. Ann, also on Staten Island. In 2014, he became the administrative vicar of Visitation Parish in the Bronx. Since September 2015, Father McCarthy has served as the chaplain of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School on Staten Island.
A native of Valhalla, Father Muldoon was ordained on May 25, 2019, by Cardinal Timothy Dolan. He served first as parochial vicar of St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville, then as parochial vicar of St. Patrick’s Church in Yorktown.
In January 2022, he was named as an instructor at St. Joseph Seminary. In July 2023, he became parochial vicar of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the director of the archdiocese’s Office of Interreligious and Ecumenical Dialogue, while pursuing a doctorate at the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
In February 2025, he continued his doctoral studies at St. Joseph Seminary. In July 2025, he was named the secretary to Cardinal Timothy Dolan while remaining the director of the Office of Interreligious and Ecumenical Dialogue, and part-time faculty member at St. Joseph Seminary.
