Starting February 11, the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture will present a film series that delves into complex human experiences through the lens of challenging topics like incarceration, abortion, and the death penalty. These narratives explore themes of redemption and human connection, offering audiences a chance to engage with nuanced stories that challenge preconceptions and invite deeper understanding.

The “Horizons of Hope” series features three films: “Shelter in Solitude,” “The Basement Talks,” and “Blue Baby: A Fight for America’s Youth.” The films, individually and the series as a whole, seek to address questions that resonate deeply within faith and spirituality, touching on the most fundamental human experiences.

Written by and starring Siobhan Fallon Hogan (“Men in Black”; “Seinfeld”), “Shelter in Solitude” is about a death row prisoner with 10 days left to live who forms an unlikely bond with a washed-up country singer turned prison guard.

“The Basement Talks” is a gripping documentary that follows the story of six women—leaders on opposing sides of the abortion debate—who met secretly and under threat of violence for six years to replace dangerous and divisive stereotypes, strategies, and rhetoric with empathy, respect, and genuine friendship.

“Blue Baby” follows eight formerly incarcerated teens over four years as they navigate life within a rehabilitative community that serves as an alternative to prison.

Screenings take place on February 11, 18, and 25, with 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. showings on each day. The 2 p.m. screenings are free with registration. A donation of $20 is suggested for 7 p.m. shows.
