Staten Island’s St. Joseph by the Sea High School Lady Vikings took on the archdiocese two-time defending champions, Monsignor Scanlan High School Lady Crusaders, and prevailed 60-57.
The game, held at Christ The King High School in Queens on Sunday, February 25, pitted the Catholic High School Athletics Association (CHSAA) “AA” girls’ basketball’s number one and two seeds and did not disappoint. Earlier in the season, Monsignor Scanlan had come back from 16 points down to beat St. Joseph’s by three. St. Joseph by the Sea is the Archdiocese of New York’s largest high school by student population.
The Lady Vikings were led by CHSAA Player of the Year Danielle Williamsen and Junior Angelina Hodgens who made First Time All-League. The Lady Crusaders were led by sophomore Madison Howard who made First Team All-League and Senior Alyssa Febres who made Third Team All-League.
The score was close in the first half until the Vikings went on a 15-3 run in the second quarter. Then the Crusaders caught up, taking the lead, 31-30, at halftime.
At the close of the third quarter, the Vikings were back up and in the lead, 46-42.
In the fourth quarter, with 43 seconds left, Howard brought the Crusaders within two, 59-57, with a steal at half-court and a lay-up.
With 3.5 seconds left, Williamsen, an 86 percent free-throw shooter, was fouled and made one of two free throws, bringing the score to 60-57. The Crusaders had the final possession with 2.8 seconds left but missed their last three-point shot at the buzzer.
With the 60-57 win, the Lady Vikings earned a bid to the City Tier One playoffs as the number one seed, with a bye to the semi-finals on Thursday, February 29. The Lady Crusaders enter the city tournament as the number three seed and begin in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 27.
Danielle Williamsen has already committed to Marist College. A number of the other players are expected to commit this spring.
The money will be used by the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, a papal agency for humanitarian and pastoral support.
