Following is a statement by Kristen Curran, director of government relations for the New York State Catholic Conference:
“Governor Hochul announced Thursday that, once again, New York State will prop up the failing Planned Parenthood organization with an additional $35 million bailout. Planned Parenthood has received tens of millions of dollars from the state over the last few years, and yet it continues to flounder. Hard-working New York taxpayers should not be forced to fund the abortion industry against their conscience, and they also deserve to know where their money is going, since the organization keeps coming back for more.
“With struggling New Yorkers facing the loss of Medicaid and SNAP benefits, yet another $35 million down the drain for Planned Parenthood is a waste of critical resources that could be used instead to lift the poor and vulnerable.”
The Catholic Conference represents the Bishops of New York State in public policy matters.
Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, sent a letter to leaders of the Jewish community in the United States, expressing the Catholic Church’s prayerful solidarity with the Jewish community.
