Archbishop Stepinac and Monsignor Scanlan High Schools were among Archdiocese of New York schools that celebrated their student athletes on Tuesday, who officially committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Stepinac held a 2025 National Signing Day ceremony to honor members of the Class of 2026, including five basketball players, three baseball players, and two for lacrosse:

Basketball

Baseball

  • Nicholas Amador ’26, Greenwich, Connecticut – Merrimack College
  • James Cosgrove ’26, White Plains – University of Scranton
  • Aiden LaSalle ’26, Eastchester – University of Hartford

Lacrosse

  • Kiernan Austin ’26, White Plains – Binghamton University
  • Robert Tumolo ’26, Mahopac – Springfield University

“It starts off with our academics and the kids. It shows with the great colleges they get to go to. They do the work off the field and off the court as well as on it. We have a lot of talented kids, and we have great coaches. It’s kind of a big family, we work for each other, we work together, and we make sure that the kids have the opportunities,” Stepinac Athletic Director Mike O’Donnell told The Good Newsroom after the ceremony. O’Donnell served as a coach at the White Plains high school for 38 years before transitioning into his new role earlier in 2025.

Patrick Massaroni, Stepinac’s head basketball coach, gave credit to the players and their families for staying in the same school for four years. Now, after the signing ceremonies, some livestreamed nationally, the hard work begins, with the high school basketball season beginning later this month.

“It’s actually a relief for a lot of them, and relief for me as well, and my staff. But now it’s reining them back in and understanding what the ultimate goal is, which is to try to go make history and be four-time champions, which has never been done in [New York Catholic basketball] history, and not take every day for granted, especially the seniors. This thing goes fast and having nine [seniors], and five of them signing today, we need to make sure that we keep everybody grounded and continue to work hard,” Massaroni told The Good Newsroom.

Student athletes are not required to commit to universities until February. However, many sign early in order to guarantee themselves a spot on a competitive roster, and, for winter athletes, to allow them to focus on the upcoming season.

Monsignor Scanlan’s Howard Chooses Syracuse

Monsignor Scanlan High School Lady Crusaders’ guard Madison Howard revealed her choice after narrowing offers to the University of Rhode Island, St. John’s University, and Syracuse University. At a ceremony in the Bronx school’s gymnasium, Howard, surrounded by family, friends, and teammates, unzipped her jacket to reveal a “‘Cuse Bound” T-shirt featuring an image of her, in a video posted to her Instagram account. She then promptly signed her letter of intent.

Along with her play as a guard for Scanlan, Howard impressed during the 2024, Nike-sponsored NYvsNY summer tournament, where she was named Most Valuable Player for the girls’ competition.

“Buscamos saciar la santa curiosidad de los fieles hispanohablantes del Valle del Hudson acerca de Dios y sus cosas”, dijo el padre Arthur Fernando Rojas.
