The digital newsroom of the Archdiocese of New York received multiple awards in categories including “Best Video – Hot Topic,” “Best Multimedia Package – Hot Topic,” and “Best Spanish Language Website”
The Good Newsroom™, the digital newsroom of the Archdiocese of New York, earned 12 awards from the Catholic Media Association (CMA) at its 2026 Catholic Media Conference in Atlantic City, N.J., for work published in 2025. The digital outlet was recognized for its achievements in video and multimedia storytelling, news writing, reporting on cultural heritage, and the caliber of its staff.
Launched in November 2022, The Good Newsroom was developed to tell the stories of the Catholic community of the Archdiocese of New York. It emphasizes the use of video, faster publishing, and access to news through digital channels. In December 2025, the publication formally launched Buenas Noticias, the dedicated digital platform designed to connect the Hispanic Catholic community with local Church news, spiritual resources, and community events in Spanish.
The newsroom produces content in both English and Spanish, featuring stories that highlight the faith communities and rich traditions throughout the area. This approach, along with a dedicated newsroom and digital publishing team, has produced a dynamic communications platform that is critical to the archdiocese, given its location in the world’s media capital.
Organizational and individual excellence
The Good Newsroom earned five first-place awards, including Best Website – Spanish Publication for Buenas Noticias, praised by judges for its clean, well-organized design and high-quality Catholic content. The newsroom also took first place in two multimedia package categories, for its coverage of the death of Pope Francis and the Jubilee Year of Hope, as well as Best Video for its real-time coverage of the papal conclave and the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, featuring reporting from both Rome and New York. Fernanda Pierorazio earned first place for Best Reporting on Cultural Heritage for her piece on el Día de Muertos in the Mexican Catholic community.
Pierorazio also earned second place for Editor of the Year in the Spanish-language category, recognizing her leadership in launching Buenas Noticias and her ability to combine archdiocesan news coverage with personal faith stories featuring Hispanic media personalities. The outlet’s electronic newsletter, The Good Newsletter, took second place for Best Diocesan Electronic Newsletter.
Archbishop Hicks’ support and additional recognitions
Archbishop Ronald Hicks of New York has been an essential advocate for the digital platform, which publishes his homilies, messages, and videos. “The Good Newsroom has become a vital part of how we share the Gospel with our people and with the world. These awards are a testament to the talent, dedication, and love for Jesus and His Church of the entire team. I thank them for their tireless work to evangelize through storytelling, bringing the good news of our archdiocese to Catholics of all backgrounds, in both English and Spanish.”
Archdiocese of New York Auxiliary Bishop Edmund J. Whalen, vicar general, said, “The Good Newsroom continues to grow as a source of information and evangelization with both local and universal Catholic reporting. The recognition by the Catholic Media Awards is both well-deserved and the impetus to develop further this key component of outreach in the Archdiocese of New York.”
The Catholic Media Association also honored individual work from The Good Newsroom with five honorable mentions: Pierorazio for her coverage of the papal conclave in the Hot Topic category and also for Best Parish Profile, Armando Machado for Best News Writing on a Local or Regional Event, and Patrick Grady for his video looking back at Pope Francis’ visit to New York and also for Best Multimedia News Package.
