The Third Word of Christ: ‘Woman, Behold Your Son… Behold Your Mother’ | Fridays at the Foot of the Cross

On this Friday of the Third Week of Lent, The Good Newsroom continues its Lenten series “Fridays at the Foot of the Cross” with a reflection on the Third Word of Christ: “Woman, behold your son… Behold your mother” (John 19:26–27).

From the Cross, Jesus entrusts His Mother to the beloved disciple. The Catechism teaches that while Jesus is Mary’s only son, “her spiritual motherhood extends to all men whom indeed he came to save” (CCC 501).

This installment is paired with a teaching from St. Bernard of Clairvaux: “The Spear which opened His side passed through the soul of the Virgin.”

Together, Sacred Scripture and Tradition invite us to contemplate the gift of Mary at Calvary. At the foot of the Cross, she becomes Mother to all who follow her Son.

As we continue our Lenten journey, we stand with Mary at the Cross, receiving her as our Mother and entrusting ourselves more fully to Christ.

Today’s readings call us to true holiness, to be grounded in God’s life in us. Repeating the prayer for the gift of the Holy Spirit in these days between the Ascension and Pentecost helps us focus on, pray for, and seek to live that “grounded-ness” in God.
