Sister Sheila Campbell, OSU, formerly Sister St. James, a beloved member of the Ursulines of the Roman Union Eastern Province USA for 63 years, entered eternal life peacefully on November 24, 2024, at Andrus on Hudson Nursing Home.
Sister Sheila was born in New York City on October 3, 1943, the daughter of James Campbell and Gertrude Kelly. She professed vows in the Ursuline Community on March 15, 1966. Sister Sheila earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of New Rochelle and a master’s degree in English at St. Louis University. She began her ministry in education as a teacher at Blessed Sacrament School in New Rochelle, followed by the Academy of Mount St. Ursula in the Bronx, and Director of Assessment at the College of New Rochelle.
Touched by the need of recent immigrants, Sister Sheila went on to receive a master’s degree in education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language. Equipped with this degree, Sister Sheila was an ESL instructor in the New York City school system, Bronx Community College, Westchester Community College, and Concordia College.
One of Sister Sheila’s most memorable ministries was at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Seminary, where she was privileged to teach English to the young men who would be ordained priests in the Ukrainian Rite Catholic Church. Given her vast experience in education, Sister Sheila served on the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, the Ursuline School, and the Adult Learning Center in New Rochelle.
In addition, Sister Sheila also served the Ursuline Community as Provincial Secretary, local superior, and member of the Formation Team.

She is survived by her sister, Sarah Campbell, her loving and caring Melvin and McMorrow nieces and nephews, and her Falvey cousins. She was predeceased by her dear sister, Ellen Anne Sebastian.
Visitation for Sister Sheila will be Monday, December 2, 2024, 3:30-7 p.m., at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY. The wake service will be at 4:15 p.m.
The funeral mass will be on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10804. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery immediately following.
